La Ilíada, The Iliad (in Ancient Greek Ἰλιάς: Iliás; in Modern Greek Ιλιάδα: Iliáda) is an epic Greek poem and the oldest written work of Western literature. Traditionally attributed to the poet Homer, it is composed in dactylic hexameter and consists of 15,693 lines (divided by editors, even in ancient times, into 24 books or rhapsodies). The plot centers on the wrath of Achilles (μῆνις, mênis), and it recounts the events of the tenth and final year of the Trojan War, taking place over 51 days. The title of the work derives from the Greek name for Troy, Ilión. Both The Iliad and The Odyssey were considered by the ancient Greeks, and later generations, to be the most important works in Greek literature, serving as the foundation of Greek pedagogy.
