The Odyssey is one of the most iconic and foundational works of classical Western literature, attributed to the ancient Greek poet Homer. Composed in the 8th century BCE, this epic poem follows the journey of the hero Odysseus (known as Ulysses in Roman mythology) as he attempts to return home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Along his perilous voyage, Odysseus encounters numerous challenges, mythological creatures, and extraordinary situations that test his wit, bravery, and perseverance.

The narrative alternates between the adventures of Odysseus and the struggles faced by his wife, Penelope, who defends her home from the many suitors vying for her hand during her husband’s prolonged absence. The story is divided into 24 books, each depicting different stages of Odysseus’s journey, including encounters with legendary figures such as the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens, and the sorceress Circe, as well as his descent into the underworld.
